THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS COMORBIDITY AND THE SEVERITY OF ACUTE EXACERBATIONS IN COPD PATIENTS (2015–2025)

Abstract

Comorbid type 2 diabetes mellitus is frequently found in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is suspected to worsen the condition during acute exacerbations. This study aimed to determine the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus comorbidity and the severity of acute exacerbations in COPD patients. This study was a descriptive analytic study with a retrospective approach and a cross-sectional design using medical record data of COPD patients at RSD K.R.M.T. Wongsonegoro from 2015–2025. A total of 27 patients were included using total sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Fisher Exact test. The results showed that most patients were ≥ 60 years old and male. Most patients had uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus. The distribution of exacerbation severity consisted of 12 mild cases, 14 moderate cases, and 1 severe case. Bivariate analysis showed a p-value of 0.449, indicating no significant relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus comorbidity and the severity of COPD exacerbations.Type 2 diabetes mellitus comorbidity in COPD patients was more frequently found in mild to moderate exacerbations than in severe exacerbations
